5 Steps to Apply PVC and Prepare the Roof for Winter

As winter approaches, preparing roofs, terraces and other outdoor surfaces helps prevent problems caused by rain and moisture. One of the solutions used to reinforce waterproofing is the application of PVC, which creates a resistant barrier against water ingress.

VITO has gathered the information you need to understand the advantages of PVC waterproofing and prepare your outdoor surfaces for the wetter months.

Waterproofing should preferably be carried out before periods of more frequent rainfall, allowing vulnerable areas of the roof to be identified and corrected in advance.

Proper application helps to:

  • Prevent water ingress and moisture build-up;
  • Protect the roof and structural elements;
  • Reinforce joints, finishes and other areas more exposed to water ingress;
  • Reduce the need for interventions during the months of heavier rainfall.

In addition, working on a clean, dry surface is essential to ensure proper application, so it is important to choose a period with favourable weather conditions.

How to Apply PVC Step by Step

1. Inspect and Prepare the Surface

Before installing the PVC membrane, check the condition of the roof and identify cracks, irregularities, damaged areas or points where water may accumulate.

The VITO Industrial Wet and Dry Vacuum Cleaner helps you remove dust and debris from the work area, making it easier to prepare the base.

2. Measure and Prepare the PVC Membrane

Carefully measure the area to be waterproofed and plan the layout of the different sections before starting to cut.

The VITO Tape Measure with Window makes it easier to take the measurements needed to prepare the different pieces and reduce material waste.

Once the measurements have been marked, cut the membrane with the VITO Auto-Retracting Cutter, ensuring efficient cuts.

3. Position the PVC

Gradually position the membrane over the surface, avoiding creases or excessive tension.

Particular attention should be paid to corners, joints, finishes, drains and pipe penetration points, as these areas require especially careful installation to maintain the continuity of the waterproofing.

4. Weld the Joints

One of the main characteristics of PVC membranes is that the different sections can be joined using hot-air welding, creating continuous, watertight joints.

The VITO Digital Heat Gun features digital temperature and airflow adjustment, allowing the heat to be adapted to the work being carried out.

5. Check the Entire Waterproofing System

After application, carefully check all overlaps, joints and finishes. Depending on the system used, some joints may also receive a complementary finish using specific liquid PVC products.

Waterproofing a roof with PVC before the rains arrive makes it possible to act preventively on vulnerable areas and protect the building against water ingress and moisture.

With careful preparation, correct application and VITO tools, the work can be carried out with greater precision and the roof prepared for the most demanding months of the year.
